The Hidden Force: Chapter VI ✨

Mirror, Mirror

My reflection in the mirror catches me off guard. How? How could a reflection catch someone off guard? Because I’m not in the mirror. Well, I am but I’m wearing a fancy white dress and some kind of nature branchy crown.

I can just tell though it’s not me. That’s not who I am. Or at least I don’t think it is.

“Eloria! I wasn’t finished explaining!” Adan yells suddenly appearing behind me. I take no notice of him. I continue to analyze my reflection.

Adan stands directly behind me seemingly trying to block out his reflection from appearing in the mirror.

“What is this?” I ask.

“This is the mirror of veritas. It shows you the truth in your reflection. No matter how ugly it might be.” he explains.

“Why don’t you want to look in it?” I query.

Surprisingly, he laughs at me. I turn around to face him. Then he seems to remember something.

“OOOOOH” he finally says, “Sorry, it’s easy to assume everyone knows as much as I do. No offense but I’m a Se-.”

“You’re a what?”

“Nevermind, just let me answer your question.”

“Okay, well I have a new question.”

“I’m not answering that.”

Adan suddenly seems almost embarrassed or nervous or worried. Possibly a mix of the three.

“I can’t look into the mirror until your cousin and I decide to move to her kingdom. If I look in the mirror before that I’ll be in a coma the rest of my life.” he says.

“Why? Does it have to do with what you are?”

“Yes, but I’ve already made it clear I’m not telling you that much.”

“If I’m so important then I should know.” I challenge.

“You will just not right now. That could put me in a coma and I’m not taking that risk.” Adan states.

“You know you’re not making any sense right now! Right?!” I urge.

Then I notice Adan has been staring off into the distance. I wave my hand in front of his face to no response. After what seems like a couple minutes he snaps out of his daze.

“Shoot! I knew this would happen!” he criticizes.

“Adan, just tell me what’s going on.” I insist.

He hesitates but then yells, “FINE!” he pauses and then continues, “I-I see the future.”

“WHAT?!” I shout, “That’s incredible!”

He starts laughing again, like I just told the funniest joke in the world.

“Look” he begins, “seeing the future isn’t fun. How do I explain this? To put it bluntly, everyone who has magic hates their magic. There’s no real reason why and even if you think you like your power you never will and never have. Therefore I usually don’t tell people about my power. ‘Humans’ would think it’s silly but it’s just embarrassing to say.”

“We’re not human?” I wonder aloud.

“You’re half-royal human half-royal witch, be specific. Although I’m not sure being royalty means the same thing there.”

“I’M ROYALTY?!” I repeat.

“Yes, you’re the new queen in fact. Your mom was one of us and your father is the king.”

“As in the king who is searching everywhere for us?” I ask.

“Yes, that king,” he clarifies.

“Ok so I’m just supposed to be a queen of a place I’ve never heard of and evade capture from my father.” I repeat.

“Well when you put it like that-”

“I need some air!” I say cutting him off.

I walk outside the tent and leave the village. I run through the woods until I can’t hear or see anything but trees. After a bit of searching I find the town again and with it the inn.

I run inside. I rush to the window and look outside. I see a couple of guards outside. There’s no doubt in my mind that Adan will come looking for me soon when I don’t return.
